Century Spice Road did it really have a chance to replace Splendor ?

The games have very similar feeling and theme but when we look deeper into the game mechanics the similarities starts to fade away. Splendor is more straightforward of the two it engine building simplicity makes it much more easier to control the other players planning. Spice Road on the other hand strike to me as a next level step from Splendor a game that focus more on engine building with some good depth and interesting decisions involved in optimising your merchant deck. Both games are great entry-mid level games for board game fans but somehow Spice Road never reached the popularity level of Splendor, why do you think is the reason for that?
